A cabin filter is a device that cleans the air that enters the car interior through the heating, air conditioning and ventilation system. What is a cabin filter for, how much it costs and how to replace it with a Nissan X Trail - further in more detail in the article.

What is a cabin filter for?

The air on the roads is not clean - it contains exhaust gases and dust, allergens. In order to prevent all these substances harmful to human health from getting into the car interior, a cabin filter is designed. It plays an important role not only for asthmatics and allergy sufferers, who react especially painfully to polluted air, but also reduces the risk of diseases of the upper and middle respiratory tract in a healthy person who often drives a car.

Cabin filter device

Car manufacturers began installing cabin filters at the beginning of this century. The simplest version of this device is made of loose paper, which is treated with a phenolic solution and an electrostatic charge is applied to it.

Over time, the cabin filter models have become more diverse and complex. Modern options include several layers:

  • special filter material (the so-called non-woven material), which is able to retain particles down to 0.5 microns;
  • a layer of activated carbon, which retains dispersed particles of soot and gases, and also absorbs odors;
  • an electrostatically charged layer that attracts and retains charged particles in the incoming air;
  • an antibacterial layer (optional) that disinfects the incoming air.

When to change the cabin filter on a Nissan X Trail

In the photo: a clogged cabin filter

Passing a stream of polluted air through itself, the filter eventually becomes unusable: the pores of the nonwoven material are clogged, the static electric charge decreases or disappears altogether, the effectiveness of the layers with activated carbon and antibacterial impregnation decreases.

The part is disposable, it is impossible to repair (wash, clean) it, you just need to periodically replace it with a new one.

According to the technical documentation and the recommendations of specialists, the Nissan X Trail cabin filter must be changed every 15 thousand kilometers or every time the car undergoes scheduled maintenance.

Sometimes the need to replace the cabin filter may arise earlier, depending on the conditions in which the car is used. For example, in a heavily gassed metropolis with constant driving in traffic jams, such a need may come after 10 thousand kilometers.

Since the filtered particles remain in the filter, even with low mileage, it should be changed at least once a year, otherwise it risks becoming a breeding ground for harmful microorganisms or mold.

There are four main signs that the filter needs to be replaced, or at least look at it and find out its condition:

  1. The characteristic smell in the car interior. During operation, the filter collects all particles "captured" from the air on itself, eventually turning into a source of a very characteristic unpleasant odor.
  2. Dust entering the passenger compartment from the air duct. If, when the ventilation system of the car is turned on, a dust cloud begins to flow into the interior of the air vents from the air vents, the cabin filter is definitely time to change.

    Do not forget that a dirty filter becomes a breeding ground for pathogens and may well turn from a barrier against infections into their active supporter.

  3. Incorrect operation of the ventilation system. The more the filter clogs during operation, the more difficult it is for the air flow to enter the passenger compartment. As a result, the ventilation system starts to work intermittently: the air temperature rises in the cabin, the air conditioner experiences an additional load in summer, and the stove may start to malfunction in winter.

    Therefore, you should not save on filter replacement - its malfunction can lead to much more serious breakdowns and, accordingly, unplanned repair costs.

  4. Glass fogging. If the windows start to fog up strongly in the car, this may be due to interruptions in the operation of the air conditioner and ventilation system, caused by a strong contamination of the filter. Such manifestations are a reason to attend to the state of this part, even if it is still far from the planned replacement.

You can ask the workshop specialists to remove the cabin filter to assess how clogged it is. Timely filter replacement often solves air conditioning and ventilation problems that have arisen.

The cost of a cabin filter depends on its type. A charcoal filter is more expensive than usual, the price of an antibacterial charcoal filter is even higher.

You can also change the cabin filter yourself. It is necessary to change this part carefully, because if you do not know the device and lack of practice, you can easily damage the latches of the mounts.

The cabin filter in the Nissan X Trail is located either near the gas pedal or under the glove box ("glove compartment"), depending on the car model. Consider the basic algorithms for replacing the cabin filter in these models.

X Trail T31

The top cover of the cabin filter in the Nissan X Trail T31 is located in the area of the gas pedal. The description of this procedure in the operating manual indicates that this will require disconnecting and removing the gas pedal, but this is quite difficult, you can do without this procedure - however, access will be carried out with some difficulty.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. To the right of the gas pedal there is a lining held on plastic clips, which must be carefully removed. Behind it is a rectangular filter cover.
  2. Pry off the outside of the cabin filter from below with a screwdriver.
  3. Pry off the filter module with a cover, pull it out by squeezing.At this stage, it is important to pay attention to the direction in which the filter was inserted. Insert the new filter in the same way: with the arrow pointing in the direction of the air air.
  4. Squeeze the new filter, insert it in place of the old one.
  5. Assemble in reverse order.

In this model, the cabin filter is located behind the "glove compartment". To replace it, you will need a pair of screwdrivers - slotted and Phillips.

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Remove the contents of the "glove compartment".
  2. Turn the glove compartment attachment axles towards you and pry them off with a slotted screwdriver to dismantle.
  3. Remove the "glove compartment". Behind it is a plastic part that must be removed, for which you need to unscrew 6 self-tapping screws.
  4. Raise the top compartment. Behind it will be a plate that can be bent to pull the part out from below. Be careful - the part will hang on multiple wires. Behind it is the filter cover, across which the wiring stretches. Disconnect the wiring, remove the cover. Care is important here - latches break easily!
  5. Remove the old cabin filter, install a new one (arrow up). Then carry out the installation in the reverse order.

Replacing the cabin filter is, in general, a simple procedure that requires some care and, like any work with a car, knowledge of the location and method of fastening parts. If, nevertheless, independent work on replacing the cabin filter raises concerns, you can always contact a company car dealership or service station specialists.
