Over the past few years, the Gorky Automobile Plant (GAZ) has noticeably changed its model range, in which today you can find a car for both civil and commercial use. Moreover, thanks to competent pricing, reliability and updated characteristics, the company's products are in consistently high demand not only in Russia, but also far beyond its borders.
One of these cars is the updated GAZ 4WD, which is rightfully considered one of the best creations of the domestic auto industry. The car has practically no competitors in the market that could offer a 4x4 wheel arrangement for the same money. For this reason, the car is widely in demand among government agencies, as well as private entrepreneurs and ordinary people who, for one reason or another, need an affordable car with good carrying capacity and the capabilities of classic SUVs.
In favor of GAZ 4WD, when compared with foreign counterparts, there is a wider network of service centers and the availability of components.
Representatives of the GAZ automobile concern proudly declare that, in comparison with its predecessor, the car has become not only more attractive, but also more reliable due to the use of higher quality components.
Exterior GAZ 4WD
It should be noted right away that the style of the new GAZ 4WD completely repeats that of the previous generation. The car is instantly identified in city traffic, which can be added to the assets of GAZ designers. The front part of the car attracts with a neat head optics, a small trapezoidal false radiator grille, with a brand emblem located in the center, as well as a plastic bumper, into which round "pupils" of foglights can be optionally mounted.
Customers can choose from three variations of the body: flatbed, all-metal van and bus. The profile and rear of the car, regardless of the version, have proportions that are classic for their body, and are also devoid of any embellishments - everything is simple, understandable and functional. However, for its price, the car looks more than worthy and is practically in no way inferior to more expensive foreign counterparts.
The onboard version of GAZ 4WD is offered in a three-seat and six-seat version, which have the following dimensions:
- Length - 4880 mm (5240 mm);

- Wheelbase - 2760 mm (2900 mm).
The outer dimensions of the all-metal van and bus version are:

Compared to its predecessor, the car has received a more impressive ground clearance, which is now 205 mm (previously 150 mm). Thanks to him and the connected all-wheel drive, the car has excellent off-road capabilities inherent in more expensive and sophisticated SUVs.
A nice little thing was the expansion of the color palette, where, in addition to the classic colors, it became possible to order a camouflage body color, which will certainly appeal to hunters and representatives of law enforcement agencies.
Interior GAZ 4WD
Once inside the GAZ 4WD, an updated front panel immediately catches the eye, the architecture of which, in terms of ergonomics and functionality, can well compete with most foreign cars of a similar class. In front of the driver is a four-spoke steering wheel with the ability to control the audio system, as well as a laconic and easy-to-read dashboard, which has acquired the function of adjusting the backlight level. The central part of the dashboard is represented by the audio system and microclimate control unit, which is devoid of any design surplus.
The presence of a large number of pockets and cup holders deserves special attention, although the quality of the latter leaves much to be desired. The fit of the parts and the materials used have become of better quality, but they are still inferior to similar solutions in foreign cars. The double razdatka of the floor switches remained unchanged, which, however, became more accurate when shifting gears.
The front seats provide a high seating position, which guarantees good visibility. The chairs themselves allow you to comfortably accommodate a person of almost any size, but they are devoid of any additional amenities - lateral support, lumbar bolsters, ventilation and heating.
Depending on the version, the car boasts a three-, six- or seven-seat layout. Passenger seats in the second and third rows are devoid of any adjustments and provide an almost vertical seating position, which is inconvenient on long trips. On the other hand, the car does not pretend to be a family and the most comfortable car, first of all it is a working tool that perfectly copes with its direct tasks. The trunk volume of the all-metal van is 6.4 cubic meters, and in the cargo-passenger version - 3.4 cubic meters, which is one of the best indicators in the class.
Technical characteristics of GAZ 4WD
At the moment, the line of power units available for installation on GAZ 4WD is represented by:
- A 2.9-liter 4-stroke petrol engine developing a maximum 107 "horses" at 220 Nm of torque. The dynamic characteristics of this motor, to put it mildly, are not impressive: acceleration from 0 to 100 takes about 30 seconds, and the maximum possible speed is 110 km / h. The average fuel consumption, according to the manufacturer, varies between 11-12.5 liters, but in the city the consumption easily exceeds the mark of 16 liters / 100 km.
- Diesel 4-stroke turbocharged and cooled 1.8 liter engine producing 120 hp. at 270 Nm of torque. The acceleration dynamics of a car with such an engine is slightly better, and the maximum speed is limited to 120 km / h, but in order to "squeeze" them out, the driver will have to try pretty hard. Fuel consumption is slightly less and averages 11-12 l / 100 km.
Both engines are powered by a 5-speed manual gearbox, and are equipped with a plug-in 4WD transmission with a downshift and rear differential lock, capable of giving odds to most SUVs in the same price range.
The company proudly states that GAZ 4WD has received a large number of new components and assemblies, most of which are produced abroad. Thanks to this approach, the car has significantly improved its reliability and lost most of the family "sores".
The chassis of the car is represented by a front independent spring suspension, as well as a rear dependent spring suspension, because of which the car pretty "bounces" on bumps when driving with an unloaded rear axle. The braking system is represented by disc brakes at the rear and at the front, which provide confident deceleration to almost a three-ton car.
We should also talk about sound insulation, which, unfortunately, is absent as such. The hum of the engine, especially when it comes to a diesel unit, seeps well into the passenger compartment already at 60 km / h, but this problem can be solved by using the services of specialized service stations, where they will de-noise the engine compartment and interior for a relatively low amount.
Safety of GAZ 4WD
Safety has never been the trump card of domestic cars, and the updated GAZ 4WD was no exception, although it is worth paying tribute to the manufacturer, who began to develop this direction. So, the car boasts the presence of:
- Disc brakes from Bosch;
- Safety belts;
- Safety steering column;
- Electrically heated and electrically adjustable side mirrors;
- Special crumple zones, in case of a head-on collision;
- Anti-lock braking system;
- Power steering;
- ELocker Eaton systems.
Of course, the car is inferior to most foreign counterparts, but GAZ plans to equip the 4WD model with frontal airbags, a stabilization system and other chips designed to increase the level of active and passive safety.
Complete set and price of GAZ 4WD
The minimum price for the onboard version of GAZ 4WD is 730 thousand rubles (about 12.8 thousand dollars) for the gasoline version and 972 thousand rubles (about 17 thousand dollars) for the diesel version. The price for an all-metal van and bus starts at 750 thousand rubles. and 875 thousand, respectively.
For this money, the buyer can count on the availability of:

GAZ 4WD is a practical and affordable off-road "hard worker", which received an improved interior, a wider list of equipment and an upgraded technical component, which allowed not only to increase the cross-country ability, but also the reliability of the car.
